Downtown Hallets Cove
First settled by former Asians thousands of years ago, up to 90% of them (perhaps 100 million total) died from diseases spread by European profiteers before the Dutch arrived here in the 1600s. Hallets Cove was the beginning of Astoria.
A century ago, NYC Developers hoped for financial investment from one of America’s wealthiest men, John Jacob Astor. Knowing the subway would one day make a theoretically quick trip to Midtown, Hallets Cove was renamed ‘Astoria’ in order to flatter good old John J. and encourage his interest.
He never did cross the river but did manage to cough up a measly $1000 to invest. The Ritch didn’t get that way by giving it away you know.
